When my son was in fifth grade, he was in a public elementary school in Phoenix Arizona where we lived for a short time. One day when I was at school, his teacher asked me if I was aware that being gay was against God and the Bible? It caught me so off guard when she said that, that I really don’t know what to say. My response was I just looked at her in kind of in shock and said, “I actually hadn’t read that in the Bible, but my understanding was it also says that love thy neighbor and thou shall not judge.” I walked out of the school. I cried on the way home. I went home and told my husband that we needed to leave and leave, I meant leave from where we were living because he was going into middle school the next year. He had already been bullied a lot. I was so scared that something’s going to happen to him, bad happen to him. At that point, when we decided to basically sell our home, leave the job that my husband had and move our family because I just didn’t want him to being in an environment like that. There were other things, a lot of other things that happened, too. Not the Phoenix is a bad place, but I think the most important is you have to have like I can only speak for having a gay son. You have to have them in an environment that’s accepting, so that they can fully be who they are. That’s when I knew. I mean I pretty much suspected we couldn’t stay there, but that’s when I knew we have to leave.
