Transcription:
One of the biggest mistakes that’s been made really for thousands of years is to believe the best way to help kids with ADHD is to punish them more. These are the battered children throughout the history. For thousands of years they’ve been spanked, beaten, tortured. And guess what? It does no good. And it does a lot of harm.
So let’s put aside that solution once and for all – this is not a matter of discipline. It is a matter of finding structures, interventions, whatever recipe you come up with to help these children develop control internally that doesn’t come naturally.
It’s not a matter of effort. It’s a matter of structure, support, education, sometimes medication, sleep, diet, exercise – that’s how to strengthen their brakes as I like to say. Give them the internal control that they lack. Punishment is absolutely counterproductive.
