In general, if a child comes in contact with any poisonous substance, give us a call at Poison Control. However, if the child not breathing, having a seizure, or is unresponsive; these are reasons to bypass poison control and call 9-1-1 for the immediate medical emergency attention that the child will need. As a result, the child will then be taken to the hospital and poison control can get involved later on.

Over 70% of the calls received at the center are able to stay at home and avoid a visit to the hospital, based on the over-the-phone support of the center.
