Obstetrician Mike Brisinger, MD, explains when circumcision is typically done and how long parents can wait to make the decision to circumcise their newborn son

Transcription:
How late can parents wait to make a decision about circumcision? It's a little tricky to answer because it depends upon many things.
The first thing, of course, we do it usually the day after birth in the hospital, if the baby is healthy. Some hospitals, you go home with baby, he comes back with the mom to the doctors office a few days later and it's done in a doctors office.
The longer you wait, the bigger the baby gets. Most OBGYN doctors or pediatricians will not do it if he is over a certain size. He then has to be referred over to a urologist, and they usually want you to wait until the kid is a couple of years old. They usually have to do a general anesthesia to do the procedure.
The other thing is that insurance coverage. Some plans do not cover circumcision in newborns, after 30 days of life. It could cost you several hundred or a thousand dollars to pay for out of pocket.
