People ask about genetic counselling during pregnancy. While you are pregnant, there may be certain ethnic backgrounds that have a predisposition for having something genetic. For example, people who are African American, are carriers for Sickle Cell Disease, whereas, where people are Jewish, they have a predisposition for certain genetic diseases. Your doctor, based on your ethnic background, might decide to draw some labs to see if your baby is at risk for one of these genetic diseases. In addition, as a woman gets older, her risk of chromosomal abnormalities start to increase as well. Based on your age, your doctor might also do some tests to figure out if you are at risk for a chromosomal disorder, such as, Down Syndrome.
