The main advantage of a CVS over an amniocentesis is when we can do it. A CVS is done between 10 1/2 weeks to 14 weeks; where an amnio you have to wait for 16 weeks in order to get the information. Depending on your age and depending on the risk of chromosome Y abnormalities, i.e. people who are older tend to be at a little higher risk for having Down's Syndrome or other chromosome Y abnormalities. A CVS may be more prudent at that point. However, because the CVS is riskier than the amnio, if your risk is deemed not to be that high, your doctor may decide to do an amniocentesis as opposed to a CVS, which is, again, a riskier procedure.

Dr. Anthony Chin was born in Hollywood, CA and raised in Santa Monica, CA.  He was educated at UCLA and graduated with a BS in Molecular Biology.  Dr. Chin attended medical school at UCLA and finished his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.  Board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and published in peer reviewed journals, Dr. Chin is the  recipient of several research, patient satisfaction and teaching awards, and continues to be involved with the teaching of medical students and resident physicians.  He is happily married and has a three month old daughter named Alaia Rose.
