There are 2 major products that are often talked about when people are looking at umbilical cord stem cells. The first is the cord blood based product and the second is the cord tissue drive stem cell. These stem cells are different, while there seems to be a lot of confusion about this, I'll try to explain the differences. The first is cord blood. it actually is rich in a type of stem cells known as Hematopoietic stem cell sometimes refer to as an HSC. Hematopoietic stem cells have specific characteristics that are very good in resetting the immune systems and are often use in blood disorders, cancers or immune system disorders. On the other hand, Cord tissue provides a particular type of stem cell refer to as mesenchymal stromal stem cell or sometimes they call it MSC. MSC is known to be a cell that is fundamental in regrowing connective tissues and structures in the body and these specific MSC stem cells often or considered the cornerstone of regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine is focus more on topics that or repairing and regrowing systems in the body like heart, stroke, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury. So these stem cells have very different properties and because of their unique properties are being utilize in different ways. Another fundamental distinction between cord blood and cord tissue is that cord blood is more of a proven technology. Cord blood is currently being use to treat over 80 different life threatening diseases, where as cord tissue is very much an experimental technology whether just now looking at clinical trials to understand how these specific mesenchymal stem cells from the cord tissue could be use in regenerative medicine.
