What are your thoughts on teacher’s crowdfunding? There seems to be a ton of mixed thoughts coming from the media.

I think a job that requires a BS degree now should not even require crowdfunding, but teaching is a selfless profession that deserves all the accolades and a decent salary whatever the means imo!

As a teacher I am so appalled by this. Teachers should be given the salary and supplies needed to teach the youth of America! We hold the future in our hands. Tax dollars should fund schools!

I agree! I just heard about a teacher who had to buy or find dictionarys for all of his students in 8th grade. :(

I am stunned every time I hear about how much teachers spend on their own classrooms. That is not OK! We need to pay teachers and provide for them the way we do other professionals.

It is shameful our teachers aren't paid a wage that allows them to teach our children to their full capacity. The most amazing teacher any of my children ever had, left teaching to do banking because the money was so much greater. Children are missing out on this teacher's passion and amazing ability to connect with a child. Very unfortunate.

Guess I'm out of the loop on this one. What is Crowdfunding. Is it where they request funds online. I'm fortunate to be in a school district that treats there teachers very well. I've heard that teacher's pay here is 3x that of West Virginia.

Yes, crowdfunding is asking for funds online. Some teachers have set up GoFundMe campaigns to cover back to school supplies for kids. They are being backlashed and supported. I feel that it is sad they have to resort to this as I imagine being a teacher is a super hard and stressful job. I personally couldn’t be a teacher because I have a hard time managing my own three boys. I couldn’t imagine having an entire classroom to look after, ensure safety, and teach them education all at the same time.

When they were in kindergarten, since they did not have desks and worked at tables what the teachers did was open all the supplies. For instance all the scissor which you had to send brand new in an unopened package were opened and put in containers. All the markers, crayons, glue sticks, pencils etc. Then every table had a caddy and that is how they did that. This year I told you what was happening and today I asked my son if he had the double packs of markers, all the crayons etc in his desk. He told me yes but I am not so sure. I am going to check when we have our meet the teacher night next week.

I think it is nuts that teachers have to buy so many supplies out of pocket. I also think we as parents are buying way too many supplies for our own kids. In NY our school taxes are so high, yet every year we get less and less. I mean when I went to school crayons, markers, pencils, paper etc was all provided in the class room. Now we are expected to not only buy one box of crayons, one box of markers but 2 and 3 and I am wondering if these are all for my child? Am I making up for kids whose parents are not buying or can't buy their supplies. I believe if we are there should be full disclosure on that. We are also told that midway through we may be asked to send in more supplies. I mean every year it is worse. Now our PTA is very good and we always provide the teachers with money to purchase supplies and books from the book fair we used to do the 100% in free books that is matched and we added so many to our libraries and classrooms. This year the PTA bought all the tissues and wipes that they usually make the parents buy. you know the 3 boxes of tissues and 3 boxes of wipes. lol I just find it hard to believe that a kindergartener needs to bring in 72 pencils, 2 boxes of 48 or 96 count crayons, 2 boxes of 24 ct. colored pencils, 5 high lighters etc.

I thought our school required a lot, but I never had to send in a 48 or 96 count of crayons. Mine got the 24 and never asked for more. I would question who was getting them too if I had to send in two boxes of them.

I wonder the same thing and our lists get very specific down to the brand of pencils and they want 3 dozen, sharpened.

I think it is sad that it has come to this, but I think it is a great way to get help for a broken system. In western pennsylvania teachers are paid quite well, their jobs are in high demand. I don't think it is a very big issue here.

What do you consider paid well. Just curious as I am in NY State and are teachers are making more but it does not seem to every get to the level it should.

Teachers are often starting out around 50,000$ and can max out at or near six figures. I'm not saying they are wealthy, but having a teaching job here is a good gig.
