School Functions and Bedtime Conflict

Posted August 25, 2015 - 8:08am

Our elementary school seems to plan events around 7pm. When my children were younger, their bedtime was 7pm. They now have an 8-8:30pm bedtime, which makes it still a challenge. How do you balance events when your children have an earlier bedtime?

We don't have many evening events so it's been easy, but when we have and the event was for the older child my husband and I would take turns. One would stay home with the younger one and put her to bed, the other would attend the event. When my little one was in preschool, the PRESCHOOL would have 7PM events and that was tough. On those nights we just sucked it up and got home as soon as we could, knowing the next day might be rough. But we always leave not attending as an option.

Yes. I agree. We believe not attending is not the option. We always sucked it up, but it was hard. My youngest, 4th and 6th are up to an 8:30pm bedtime, and we still sometimes have conflicts. It's a balancing act for sure.

7 pm is really early I think, but when there's been choral recitals, open houses or whatever, I thought occassionally staying up a bit past bedtime was no big deal. Dealing with a tired kid was rough the next day, but we all survived.

Last year my 10 year old daughter would have basketball occasionally from 8:30 to 9:30.  She would stay up on those rare occurences and I would have my husband put the others to bed.  I did think it was ridiculous to have practice at that time in 5th grade.

LOL! Everyone thinks 7pm is early, but my kiddos so needed it. We still go to bed early--and wake up early. We manage.

I agree, Frugal Minded. Sports practices at 8:30 is crazy.

Wow - 8:30 practice for 10 year-olds? That's not cool. I hope that is rare.

Fortunately it only happened twice in the year.  It was hard since I typically send the elementary kids upstairs around 8.

I have never been able to get my kids to bed at 7 pm.  Even 8-8:30 pm is early for us, but it is the earliest we would be putting them to bed. We really never had any issues because of that. I know I have a friend that used to get her kids to bed at like 6 pm-not kidding. We all teased her that was all she looked forward to all day, lol.

We all go to bed early at our house. I work outside the home, so I"m up and out the door by 4:30 in the morning. By 9:30 our house is retired for the day!

When my kids were younger my ex-husband and I would divide and conquer. One of us would take the one that did not have the school event to our home and get him ready for bed. Also, we tried to get homework done right after school and have the follow days planned out - lunches and clothes and such so that when we did get home it was quick to bed. Fortunately, these nights don't happen too often!

My now 15 year old son plays on a year round baseball team. As a freshman his team would sometimes have 7 or 8pm games. We wouldn't get home until 1030 or 11 pm. Crazy!
