How do you feel about all day Kindergarten?

When I was growing up there was a morning Kindergarten class and an afternoon class. Now it seems like the trend is an all day program. What are your thoughts on this?

Our school district is still half day and it's amazing what they get in during that time. There is really no down time - it's all learning. By the end of the year all the kids read. It's definitely different then when I was in kindergarten where we still had rest time.If it's all day, you are definitely going to have to give those 5 years olds some break times.

I have experienced both. I really loved the all day Kindergarten. My child enjoyed the social interaction and it gave her a chance to learn about the school, teachers and for me to volunteer.

It has been the norm with all 5 of my kids and in NY they take education very seriously. Kindergarten has evolved to first grade-the teachers will tell you that as well. There is hardly any free play and it is very academic. If there was not a full day for this they would not accomplish what they do. Our kids end first grade reading, knowing their addition and subtraction facts, writing well, spelling etc. Some may think it is too much but it is what it is and more and more is expected each year. If a child is not reading proficiently by the end of K they want to hold them back because first grade is full speed ahead.

I think the shorter program's sufficient unless the parent needs a day care set up for them.

MommyRamblings - somehow our school expects the same of the kids by the end of Kindergarten with just half a day programs.

I'm living that right now. I had half day kinder when I was little, but my 5 yo has full day. I feel like it's such a long day! I'm just not sure of the value yet, being that she knows her colors, shapes, ABCs, can read, blah, blah, blah. BUT - she loves it. So there's that.

We just started half day, and I'm so glad it is. Although there are a lot of benefits to all day, they are just still so little. I think it is a nice transition for all of us.

I am supportive of the all day program - but it has to let five year olds be five year olds! They need plenty of freeplay and a rest time with fresh air and recess also!
