Down time after school? Or get right to homework?

Do you allow your child to play, eat or watch TV before doing their homework or do you ask them to begin right when they get home from school? My teen wants to wait until after dinner to begin his.

During sports we have very little time. I'd love to give my son some downtime when he gets home but there isn't much wiggle room. We do quick dinners before practice so that kids can get to bed at a decent hour. I think it would be much harder to try to fit it in afterwards. My son is only 8 though (siblings are 6 & 4) I think for a teen, after dinner would be fine. Also, I'm more of a night person myself and find that I work better later so I can relate.

For now I really try to have my 4th grader do her homework right after school. She has a snack first or with it, but waiting until after dinner would made it harder on her I think. But once afterschool activities start I may have to change my tune.

We come home from school and do our homework with a snack. At one hour, I will let them go play. I think it helps keeps it fresh

Homework while eating snack comes right away. If I let them outside first they wouldn't come in, also for my high schoolers it gives them an hour of quiet time before anyone else gets home.

We usually waited until after burning off some energy, having dinner & then before I'd let them watch TV they had to have it done. If they can manage to do it while watching TV I'd allow it, but they'd have to actually be DOING it!

I think when they are a teen as long as they are responsible and get it done then it should be up to them. Myself I was always tough on myself and wanted my homework done immediately on getting home so it was out of the way. I was the one who did that. I did that with my older kids but was more lax by the third on that. I now let them have downtime and do it later if they want.

It's funny, my daughter comes home and immediately does her work with a snack everyday. My son prefers to wait until much later but I feel like I want him to get it done earlier while he isn't too tired. Their body clocks are so different. He is a late night owl and she is an early riser!

That's interesting! My 4th grader prefers to get it done asap so she doesn't have to worry about it BUT she always starts reading right after school and forgets. My kindergartner can't decide if she wants homework or not - haha. She brought home an unfinished worksheet saying she had "homework" and she needed to finish it. She didn't need to - it was all her. She's so silly.

This will be my first year navigating this, and for now I'm going to play it by ear. I think it is okay to have a 30 minute break, but after dinner just seems so late to be getting into that.
