Do your kids play musical instruments?

Posted September 19, 2015 - 11:24am

We haven't introduced this here, but was wondering if anyone had kids that were invested in learning an instrument and at what age they started?

Not really..but looking into guitar lessons for my son. He has tought himself some keyboard and guitar but we're looking into finding lessons this year.

My oldest taught himself guitar. He's really good...been in a few bands and plays a Jimmi Hendrix style guitar. He taught himself at fifteen. He's 25 now. My 13 year old plays violin...she's part of the Utah Youth Symphony. she has played since she was three. I also have a daughter who plays flute. she learned in school around sixth grade.

Oh my goodness, that is great. Of course, I'm particularly impressed with the violin player. I'm curious, why did she end up starting so young, did she show an interest? I can't imagine my 4 and 5 year old playing anything right now.

That's so great that all your kids are musical! My 11-year old has been playing piano since she was about 5 and she really likes it. She just started violin last year and I think she enjoys that even more. But my 9-year old has been begging to stop playing the piano since she started at 3 years old. I finally granted her wish this year and let her quit. But what did she take up in it's place? Trumpet. And I said yes before I thought about the noise factor.

I love Pachabel Cannon in D and my daughter and I would talk about the violins. She would pretend to play an "air violin" for me when she heard the song. We researched it and found a teacher for her at age 3 and tried lessons. She absolutely loved it and would practice so much. She loved how the different strings sounded when she dragged the bow across them. It's something she has just loved and enjoyed and continues to perfect.

Your Kid's Table

That is truly incredible! You must be so proud of her!

very cool! :)

I am very proud of her. It is quite an honor to be second chair in the UYS. Her hard work is paying off.

That's so cool!

My mom's a piano teacher and she usually starts kids at 30 minutes between 6 or 7 years old.  If they start at 5, sometimes they come twice a week for 15 minutes each.  That seems to fit their attention span better.I've been a slight disappointment to my mom in that none of my kids take piano.  I do have one daughter who plays flute.

Your Kid's Table

Oh, that is good to know! Just out of curiosity, where does your mom live... is she in pittsburgh, too?

Frugal Minded M...

Unfortunately no.  If she did all of my kids would have had piano lessons.  She lives in Michigan.

Your Kid's Table

After I sent that, I figured that was the case. I would love the kids to learn piano, but we don't have one.

Mommy Ramblings

My husband is a musician (math professor is his day job lol) but we have a home filled with music. My husband started playing guitar at 9 years old. So needless to say our kids play and it is something they have literally grown up with. I play piano. We have a full music studio with a drum set, 2 keyboards and many, many guitars, amps, mics etc.  My husband's name is Jimi after Jimi Hendrix so we take it pretty seriously here.  LOL

Your house sounds so fun!!

Your Kid's Table

That is really cool! Your kids will love that you did that for them!

Unfortunately even though I play a few instruments & both their dads are pretty proficient at guitar, banjo, drums, & songwriting, neither one of my kids has shown much ability. My daughter used to sing, but doesn't really anymore. Weird.

Hallz105

Did you ever do singing lessons or anything for your daughter?  My oldest daughter has a natrally good signing voice (we have no idea where she got it from as my husband and myself can't carry a tune) and she loves to sing.

Your Kid's Table

Maybe it is skipping a generation!

Not yet but my oldest daughter is interested in music.  I've heard age 7 is the time to start piano lessons.  She turns 7 in December but we haven't decided if we will sign her up.  I'm thinking about giving her a keyboard and see to see how interested she really is in it.

Your Kid's Table

My kids have shown zero interest. My husband and I have no abilities at all. However, I want them to give them a chance to see if they like it. Who knows maybe that will change.

CandyOvercaffed

I really want my kids to learn an instrument (probably piano first) because I always regretted not learning one. Not that I had the opportunity as a kid, but still. I feel like our lives are so full I don't even know where to fit it in, though!

Your Kid's Table

You know, that is what it is with me too! I never had the opportunity, but would have loved to learn.

CandyOvercaffed

I am kind of considering guitar lessons for myself. Never too late to learn, right?

My kids never did play except the recorder, which was required in 4th grade. They both sang in the choir though and my daughter as a senior in high school still travels with hers.
