Do you participate in school fundraisers?

We live in a district that is in surplus, and there are a ton of fundraisers for school. I will participate in some, but we pay very high taxes here for the schools. Do your schools have a lot of fundraisers and, if so, how much do you participate?

Fundraisers are frustrating to me. I feel obligated to participate but usually do it half-heartedly. I just found out my kid's school is doing a fun run and I was not happy about the way it was presented last year. Basically promoters are hired and they come in and pressure the kids to get sponsors and get them all excited about the prizes they can win. Kids end up feeling left out if they don't participate because they give prizes daily/weekly in front of the whole class. At least if we were selling wrapping paper, people would actually GET something for their money.

That's terrible! I have seen shades of the same thing in my area.

Yes, my kids elementary and middle school did a lot of fundraisers. It gets tiring having to buy and/or ask family and friends/coworkers to buy items. Their school did See's Candy Chocolate Easter Eggs, Magazine and Gift Wrap, School Spirit Wear, a Walk athon and Christmas Wreaths. So much! I usually bought the minimum required and sometimes did nothing.

Same here, Kathleen. I hated my kids being used as salesmen.

Like I said, I already passed on the first fundraiser!

Wow. That's a lot! They actually set a minimum??

Fortnuately we don't have a minimum required to buy, but the kids do get rewards if they sell. So for that reason I will usually buy 1 or 2 things, but we don't go crazy. I usually don't do the HS fund raisers at all.

Right, because they probably don't even care at that point. Hard to get them behind it at that age.

I am not a fan of the whole fundraiser thing. We do a thousand fundraisers a year and teachers STILL have to pay for things in their classrooms themselves? It just seems like a broken process that hurts the feelings of kids in households that can't afford to contribute.

I agree. I am so frustrated by the current fundraiser my kids are doing. It's so high pressure! It's a "fun" run but someone comes into each class every morning and awards prizes to those that got sponsors. My kids nag me morning and night to pledge them or to call family to pledge them. They ask for $1/lap but the laps are 1/16 of a mile with a 26 lap minimum and 36 lap max. It's crazy! So many kids feelings must be getting hurt.

Ugh. That's terrible. I wish I had a solution - I hate to just complain. But I don't have time to get in the system and really understand how it all works. I will never be PTO president, that's for sure.

Oh my goodness, I hope that isn't in my future!
