How to Make Your Bathroom Unique (and Kid-Friendly)

Make Your Bathroom Unique

Sometimes researchers are interested to find out the facts on the more simple things in life. A poll of over 2000 people in the United Kingdom revealed that people spend three hours and nine minutes sitting on the loo every week. And that’s excluding showering, bathing, shaving, reflecting on the world’s problems and how we are going to solve them, etc. On average, men spend two years and 125 days of their lifetime in the bathroom, while women spend two years and 40 days.

The point is, most people want to spend their time in a clean, safe, and pretty bathroom because it’s their sanctuary and the most private room in the house. Here, we’ve come up with some new ideas that will spruce up your bathroom, and make it kid-friendly to avoid accidents because it is this smallest room in the house that is cause for many emergency room visits.

Paint

Have your wall or floor tiles become unbearable to you? It’s an expensive pain to break down tiles and put new ones, so if you can’t do that, consider painting your old tiles. True, they won’t last as long as having brand new tiles but with an excellent primer and oil-based paint, you can turn your tiles to a new color that is more your taste. We would advise talking to an expert so you get the right material needed for painting tiles, especially if you are a DIY person. Paint it in a fun color that suits you or if it is dedicated to your kids, let them help you choose a color they like.

Shutters

The most practical and stylish answer for a bathroom window is a window shutter.  The options you can find in bathroom shutters are plenty, providing privacy, a classy look, while also standing up to humidity and water. You can go with high-quality hardwood shutters, but also likely you would want waterproof protection that is also more lightweight. Shutters do a better job in the bathroom than blinds, shades, or drapes which tend to get mildew from all the humidity and are harder to clean. They provide safety from any outside intrusion and you can get the natural lighting you want from the window by adjusting the shutters louvers.

Lighting

That one bulb in the middle of the ceiling is outdated for a reason. It’s rather unattractive and can make the bathroom too dark. This can pose a safety hazard, especially for little kids. The bathroom can do with more than just one light. You could have a task light that gives good lighting for tasks such as shaving and also put other lights such as scones on either side of the bathroom mirror mounted on the wall. You can also consider using pendants for the vanity light or a chandelier with a dimmer for the main task light.

Flooring

The options in flooring are off the charts in materials, colors, shapes, and patterns. Plenty of choices are now affordable and trendy, not to mention, made with non-slip materials, making it extra safe for your kids. You can try cut-to-fit vinyl flooring, for instance. They often come in geometrical shapes that give a savvy look. Mosaic tiles are another excellent choice and because they have multiple grout lines after installment, they are super non-slippery. For an environment-friendly option, cork flooring is another choice made out of sustainable material. Just be extra careful when installing cork flooring as it needs to be sealed tightly to prevent any future damage to it.

Artwork

If you consider the plain old medical cabinet as the artwork of your bathroom, then it’s past time for a change. No matter how small or big the bathroom is, you can add artwork that eliminates the clinical look of a bathroom. Since most of us don’t have huge bathrooms, you might only have space for a piece or two of artwork so choose carefully. At the same time, bathrooms are the space where we can be quirky or try something new that we are too worried to try in the living room. That could be an area with some cool and fun wallpaper or an antique ceiling fixture.

Storage

Older bathrooms were not usually designed with storage space in mind. If that’s the case, you have to depend on yourself to make your bathroom more functional. Shelves along the walls can help with that. They won’t take up ground space, are out of reach of little kids,  and also provide a substantial amount of storage space, especially for smaller items.

Before you begin anything in your bathroom, set a realistic budget. More important, make sure that everything happening behind the walls or under the floors (electricity and plumbing) is working properly and not causing damage. Then start your journey on creating a bathroom that not only has a sleek look but is also safe and relaxing.
