Four Ways To Stay Healthy During The Winter Months

winter health

With winter finally here, there is so much to look forward to when you've got kids in the house, from enjoying the time indoors making memories by the fire together to playing outside in the snow, sleighing, and building snowmen. Winter is also the time of year where we need to pay close attention to our health and keep our immune systems in peak working order. The winter months, also known as cold and flu season, are a time where we are more likely to swap germs with others as we spend more time in close contact indoors. Knowing how to keep you and your family healthy during this time is paramount, and fortunately, there are simple ways to do that. Let's take a look at some of them.

Continue To Exercise

While some people think you shouldn't' play outside with your children when it's cold because they're likely to get sick, this is just a common misconception. Playing outdoors is healthy for your children year-round. When it's cold outside, they may even get added benefits. The sun still shines even when it is cold, so they're getting that crucial Vitamin D. It's also a great mood booster for them. How often during the frigid months has your child begged to go outside to play, and you've said no? Giving your children a say in the activities they partake in is a way to increase confidence and give them small amounts of control.

The adults reap the benefits of staying fit by going outside, as well. In addition to continuing outdoor play and exercise, get your fitness on as a family indoors, too. There are plenty of apps or videos available online to keep you motivated and to move during the winter months, so feel free to take advantage of them!

You Are What You Eat

We all know the adage that "you are what you eat," so make sure you eat healthy during the colder months. Sure, the temptation of holiday cookies and hot chocolate is around every corner -- and you can, of course, indulge. But, moderation is key. Sugar is known to be inflammatory, so make sure you're nourishing your body with healthy foods and hydrating with water often. If your children are picky eaters and you're struggling to get them on board with healthy eating, try getting them involved in the process, from picking out the best-looking produce at the grocery store to helping you chop vegetables and seasoning food. Even getting them to set the table can help motivate them to eat the whole family's foods to stay healthy.

Supplement Your Healthy Diet

Sometimes, no matter how hard we work to eat healthily and stay physical, we need to supplement our healthy diet and lifestyle. Making sure you're at peak vitamin levels not only helps keep your immune system functioning beautifully, but it can also increase your energy and mood. In the winter months, it's a good idea to invest in vitamin D gummies for adults to keep you healthy and multi-vitamin for your children. Make sure you check ingredients on your supplements and opt for those without added sugars or coloring. In the same way, you want to eat the most natural and whole foods possible, and you should look for the same in your supplements. Other fantastic additions during the winter are Elderberry, Vitamin C, and B-12 (especially if your family is vegan).

Practice Self-Care

Thankfully, cold weather and snow make you want to do activities that are also self-care -- such as taking a warm bath, cuddling up on the couch, reading a great book, and relaxing -- these are all things that nourish your soul. But, beyond that, making sure you take time to slow down and practice gratitude is excellent for your mental health. Part of staying healthy physically is staying healthy mentally. Make sure you're taking time to honor your mental health and teach healthy mental habits to your children as well.

Health is something that many of us take for granted until we're not feeling well. Try and stay proactive instead of reactive this winter so you and your family can enjoy this magical time of year together. By utilizing the tips mentioned above, you'll give the entire household a leg up in feeling their best and enjoying the season. Here's to your health!
