What’s good about a protective order is that it is a legal document that can actually help you keep the abuser away in that that if they do show up, the police can respond and you do have some legal protections. It’s also important to make sure that if you do have that protective order that you’re leaving it at your child’s school, so that if your abusive partner does try to come and check your children out of school, he can’t. It’s also important to recognize that if you do have children and someone has been abusive, make sure that you do have spoken to a lawyer, you have spoken to the district attorney about a protective order, because in the case that you do leave your children with your abusive partner, one of the risks that you do run is that if the police show up, they’re not breaking the law by being with their biological parent. So you need to be aware of a lot of the issues that come legally and that’s why it’s important to either contact a local domestic violence center or contact Love is Respect so that you can start to get help from a legal advocate on how best to protect you and your children when you’re leaving.
