The way you would know if you might need to seek out some couple's counseling is if you find yourself consistently getting stuck in certain destructive patterns of communication, like lots of blame and criticism or defensiveness and just shutting down. If you find you're having a hard time resolving conservations. Having a hard time disengaging, calming down and then coming down. If you find that you're just distancing yourselves and then resentment continues to build or you're saying things that are really hurtful to each other and not then able to make repair it would be a good idea to see a couple's therapist who can help you first of all understand what's going on for each of you. There may be things that are going on from your own childhood's for each of you. And then help you communicate with each other in better ways.
