When my son got sick with cancer, he's not the only one who got cancer – we all got cancer. We had emotional cancer and it spread through the house. Fear, anxiety, sleeplessness, anger – it's such an emotionally charged time during a family's life. And it's really, really difficult.
I think what we found to be the most helpful was to try to – like a monster coming into our house – just lock it out as much as we could. We tried to have fun family times together – we're a family and we were coping with this horribly difficult thing.
But what I found to really help us was having fun family diners, going to the movies when we could, hanging out, joking, really, really, really trying to take the focus off the disease.
