Over the last 4.5 years as a stay at home dad one thing that I’ve realized is of the utmost importance to me is managing to find a little bit of personal time here and there. And that doesn’t just apply to me as a stay at home dad. I think that applies to all primary caregivers or stay at home parents. It’s extremely difficult. And in my specific situation, I also write and do other things on the side as well as spend 11 hours a day with my kids. I think what it boils down to is a conversation that you need to have with either your spouse or your partner and lay out a blueprint of your days and exactly what you’re doing. And emphasize that you do need a little bit of time to yourself, whether it’s an hour walk or getting a coffee or reading a book. I have to take that stuff late at night, and it’s normally after my kids and my wife go to bed, but I sacrifice that sleep time just so I can wind down and sit by myself, watch a ball game, read a book, do whatever I want to do. But I think it’s important that you’re on the same page with your partner about that.
