So the five most common things that can make your child stay up at night or have difficulty sleeping through the night are: 1. Too late of a bed time – so if you miss your child’s natural window when it’s easiest for them to go to sleep and stay asleep, they’ll get overtired, secrete hormones and have a harder time going to sleep and wake up more during the night. Not logical, but true. 2. The second one is nap deprivation – so the less they sleep during the day, the more difficulty they’re going to have going to sleep at night and sleeping through the night. 3. The third one is if they’re put down to bed asleep or too drowsy, so they can’t learn the skill to put themselves to sleep and therefore back to sleep when they wake during the night, because we all naturally wake every 3 to 4 hours during the night. So it’s actually a skill we have to all learn. 4. The other reason could be underlying medical conditions – asthma, allergies, reflux and sleep apnea – are very common and often under diagnosed and those can make your child wake up during the night.
