Smash or pass is a series of groups within Facebook that are indicative of why Facebook is an unhealthy culture for our kids and young teens. These groups are dedicated to encouraging kids to post their photos, to ask others--others in the groups, whether they're adults or older teens--to say if they'd like to smash--have sex with your child--or pass--not have sex with your child. Unfortunately, we see a number of young kids and teens a part of these groups seeking all of the wrong type of validation. Within Facebook, right alongside smash or pass, are social games like "The Ville" or "Sim Social", and in these groups, our kids are rewarded and encouraged to have cyber sex with their friends on Facebook. The message I have for parents is it may be smash or pass today, but it's going to be something else tomorrow. It's important that we realize that if Facebook was a movie it would be rated R or NC-17. Kids should enjoy movies. They should enjoy social media. But, frankly, they deserve better. They deserve to be a part of an online community that's positive, age appropriate, and focuses instead on their unique interests, talents, and aspirations and shines the light on them for that instead of unfortunately sexualizing them.
