Negotiating your child's social involvement is very tricky. One of the things that becomes important in how your children make choices, is the reinforcement that on the values that you have made that you consider important. So from the time your child is young, it is very helpful to pick out traits among the children that your child is naturally playing with, that you admire. "I love the way that child is thoughtful." "Isn't that child polite?" "I love the way that child shares." Then the child will tend to pick those kinds of traits as he or she gets older.
