It's awkward to talk to their children about sex. I'll usually, at the nine or ten year old checkup, I'll say to the parent with the child in the room, "Have you discussed reproduction with your child?" Many times they will say, "No, we have not talked about that yet."
I'll say, "It's really about time because children hear things on the play yard and things like that, a lot of misinformation." There are studies that look at parents who talk to their children about sex when they are younger and give them the information. It turns out that those children are more likely to come and talk to their parents about sex when they are teenagers.
Even though it's awkward, it's really important. There are some great books out there that parents can use as resources. I like a book, "Where did I come from?" It came out in the 70's. It's very funny, lots of drawings, and I think it's a great book for parents to read to their child. It's really helpful to have something in front of you when you are having the conversation.

Dr. Lisa is a pediatrician at Tenth Street Pediatrics in Santa Monica. Following her training at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and UCLA Medical Center she began to practice a style of medicine that encourages a common sense approach to health and wellness. She empowers parents to use the resources available to them and teaches them to trust their own judgment. She feels strongly that people come to parenthood with their own history and it is valuable to have a objective third party to discuss the big and small issues that parents face on a daily basis. Lisa's patients range from healthy children to those with complex medical histories.
