Should children contribute to large purchases? Absolutely. I think kids, from a very early age, should be saving money for college. I went to a semester of college in Hawaii and I thought, "Wow, this is gonna be fantastic," but I contributed to that semester and that made it even better. It made me really value that experience more. And kids are the same way. When they contribute to something, be it the band trip to sea world or whatever they're doing, they're gonna value that experience a lot more than if you just write a check or give them money and they're done. It's just like anything in life. The more you contribute, the more you value it. If your child contributes to their first car, you better bet that they're gonna wash it more and they're gonna take care of it more and they're not gonna let their friends trash it. If you just provide them the car and it's there and it's always full of gas and - they're not gonna value it as much as if they work and contribute to that car.
