Sometimes kids are saying, "Hey, you don't get me. You don't understand me." I know that they are confusing agreement with listening, and because you are not agreeing, you are not listening. A couple of ways to show that you are understanding. Active listen, show them, "This is what I hear you saying." One time, I was sitting with my daughter, and she said, "I don't want to go to the movies with you. I'm old enough." I said, "Okay. Tell me more." "You know, my friends, they are going to be alone, and they are going to see us together. That's going to be embarrassing." I said, "Okay. It sounds like you are going to be embarrassed, me being there with you." She said, "Yes." I said, "Well, let's go to a movie theater that is five miles away. I bet your friends won't be there." She's like, "That's a good idea." So I listened to, what we call, the latent part of the message. There's the manifest, the things that are being said on the top. Then there is the latent part. Trying listening to that and I think your kids will feel listened to.
