I think that all kids expect limits to be set upon them. When we don't give them limits, they don't respect us.
I think they expect it so much that if we let them get away with anything they want, then their life is going to be very interesting when at some point, they are going to have limits set upon them. They are not going to know how to deal with them.
I know that for my children, when I say they have to do something and I have to punish them. I set the limit, they go beyond the limit, and I punish them. Inevitably, they come back to me and respect me more. They go, "Sorry dad, I know what I did was wrong."
But if you never put those limits on them, they won't have the same respect for parents. They just won't.
