Psychologist Wendy Lader, PhD, explains the root cause of self-injury in kids to help parents help their children who self-injure

Transcription:
The root cause of self-injury, generally, is that someone has intense emotional states, that they are having a hard time dealing with.
What creates those emotional states is what the therapy is all about. In our program, our whole program, our treatment is designed to try to go backwards from today and what's creating some problems from that person, back to what may have created the original problem.
The way we do that is, every time someone has the impulse to injure, we want to know, at that moment, are they having that impulse? Then we take all of those things and try to find a pattern, that can take us back to the original cause.
