We are not really sure exactly what the mechanism is about how people feel better when they self-injure. I'm not sure if it's actually a sense of pleasure or its a sense of relief.
We do know that there are probably naturally occurring endorphines or opiates that help people feel calm, when they engage in that behavior. For whatever reason, we do know that they go from an intense emotional state to being calm and being able think more clearly.
