So who should take Accutane? The traditional teaching is that Accutane is only for patients with very severe, cystic and scarring acne but as dermatologist we now recognize that many other patient groups would benefit from this highly effective medication. So patients who have mild acne that might already have scars on the skin, patients who may have psychological scarring for their acne, patients who've tried everything and it's just not working, those would be patients where we may have that discussion, would Accutane be a reasonable option for them. Why would they want to take it? What's so unique about this medication? Well, first of all, when patients take Accutane for a course of treatment around four to six months, almost all of them are clear or almost clear at the end of treatment. And the really unique, distinguishing thing about Accutane compared to all other acne treatments, is that it has the potential to induce a remission. So that means after the treatment two out of three patients, approximately, who've taken the Accutane, will stay clear or pretty close to clear for the rest of their life and that's attractive for a lot of patients. They're willing to take the time, make the commitment, have the blood work, accept the side effects in order to get that payoff, that chance of having a lifelong remission from acne.
