When a child says, "I don't understand." I want to make a differentiation between a child who truly having some learning problems, which is a small percentage a child will come to the parent with that complaint. Most of the time, a child will is perfectly capable, but is taking a shortcut. At that particular time, when a child says, "I don't understand anything about the homework." I want you to take a look and back down to the lowest level of where a child can function. For example, can you read the directions? A child can generally read the directions. Do you know what each of these words mean? A child, generally can give you those meanings. At each step, you are saying, "Wonderful. You really do know more than you thought that you knew." By the time, you have gone through a couple of those little sentences, your child is ready to work independently. The what becomes very important is, after a child is finished, you go back and say, "You thought that was really hard. It was scary and you thought you couldn't do it. You took your time, you settled down, and look what you accomplished all by yourself."
