There are three things that you can do to help make the school drop off go better for your child, and at the same time, encourage independence and resilience. First of all, if you have an older sibling, use your older child to take your younger child into school each morning. It makes the transition easier for your younger child and it makes your older child feel important and independent. Second is talk to your child's teacher. If your child is having a particularly hard time making the transition in the morning from being with you to being in the classroom, have your child's teacher set up a morning responsibility or task for your child so that they become engaged in classroom activity from the minute they walk into the classroom. One of my favorites is feeding the classroom pet breakfast every morning. And lastly, if your school has a carpool lane, drop your child off in the carpool lane as early as you possibly can. Early, meaning kindergarten. Even if you can't do it every day, celebrating and rewarding your child for being dropped off in the carpool lane encourages independence and lets her know that she can walk into school and start the school day on her own.
