I co-founded the Teaching Garden Program in response to the incidents of childhood obesity; but as we started planting gardens across the country in these schools, we could see that this was often the only connection these kids had to the environment. So the magic of the garden, not only invested them in fruits and vegetables and wanting to eat better and to give them access to fruits and vegetables, but connected them to the environment. They understood that collecting energy from the sun and putting a seed into the ground, watering it and adding nutrients to the soil; together create food/energy. I think, as an Environmentalist, it got very frustrating sometimes understanding the whole big idea of climate changing and global warming and all that is going on. If you broke it down to the simple act of planting that seed, and understanding where energy comes from, what it is and what it takes to grow nutritious food; then you may understand a little better, the complex systems in our environment. That's just maybe the micro of the macro.
