In terms of athletes, I like to group them into 2 categories. One are the athletes, the top tier athletes that are going to recruited pretty much no matter what they do. So the coaches are going to come after them because they’re nationally ranked, they’re seen in tournaments, and basically everything is handled from the coaches perspective, a student doesn't need to do much, but that doesn't encompass the majority of students. The majority of students that who play in college aren't that top tiered. So it’s the responsibility of the parents and the students to go find the schools and find the coaches. So I typically advice to first look at the type of school that you want to go to and then see if those schools have the sports that you want. Now that doesn't always work for everybody, but if you do that, then you can identify, say, 6-15 schools and you can go on any school’s website and look up the coaches information and email that coach and say, “Here’s my statistics, here’s some resume’ that shows the types of things that I've been in high school or my club team, would you be interested? And what do you want to see from me?" Some coaches will want you to come to campus and practice, some coaches will want you to send film on your playing abilities, some will want you to go to a showcase where baseball players, for example, will go to one showcase where there’s a bunch of games being played and coaches from all over the country come see the players during that time. But reaching out to the coaches, being proactive in asking, will get the process started.
