One of the pieces we’re overlooking as parents is our power. Our power when it comes to bullying. We can mobilize other parents. We can mobilize our community. And I have seen countless communities across the United States, Canada and actually across the world who were doing so. They think big, but they start small.
You start with education. Start with maybe a book group. Everybody’s going to read The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander together. And maybe it’s just a small fringe group of parents together, but you’re getting educated together. Suggest speakers to come to your community and listen together.
There’s wonderful movies coming out – one of them is called Bully. I’m involved in a documentary called Bullied to Silence. Both will be released soon. Go and attend those movies – they will be national releases – together as a group of parents and you will be mobilized, because you’ll begin to see the viciousness and the cruelty that’s involved in this process.
Think big, but start small. Your goal is to get everybody, or as many people as possible on board on the same page together. That’s how you reduce bullying. Get educated and don’t stop until everybody is there with you.
