The benefit or upside to having an official diagnosis of autism is that you have a starting out point. You know what you're dealing with so then I know what doctor to talk to, I know what people to go to, I know resources to look at. In the beginning, when I didn't know what was going on, that he was autistic, I floundered. I didn't know what to do, who to look at, and I kept looking at my child going, "What's wrong with you?" And then once I knew, "Oh, he's autistic," then I could have different compassion with my son, then I had some structure for my son, then I had something to work towards. That and also in terms of the autism culture, you can get more services, you can get more therapies afforded to you. And I think that's the best thing you can do for your child is get the most appropriate services that you can possibly get for your child, and at the earliest possible age.
