There's a couple things that I think parents can do to help avoid childhood obesity in their children. The first thing is to make having sweets and candies and chocolates and all this kind of stuff something that doesn't happen in the home. It's an outside the home thing. So we'll go out for ice cream or we'll have dessert at the restaurant, but when we're at home, that's not there. When you have all that stuff at the home, then the kids are eating candy every day and eating bad food every day, and it's a slippery slope. The other tip is not as easy for parents, but it's a very important one; if you don't eat bad foods yourself. I think so often I'll be eating chips on the couch or something like that and I'll see my little girl looking at me, and then the next day she's asking for chips. You wonder, "Well, where did that come from?" I know where it came from; it came from me. So as a parent, if you can avoid demonstrating this kind of bad behavior with food, the kids won't do it. It's hard, you've got to police yourself and get yourself on track, but in the end it's better for your kid and it's better for yourself too.
