Internal or electronic fetal monitoring, we usually have two – in our hospital, we have two devices that are used. One is called a Fetal Scalp Electrode and it’s a monitor that actually does attach to the baby superficially and it allows you to pick up the baby’s heart rate. Sometimes, in certain people, or in certain situations, it’s difficult to get the heartbeat on the external monitor, so we use an internal monitor. There’s another monitor called the Intrauterine Pressure Catheter that picks up contractions – the true intensity of a contraction. The external monitor may not be so accurate in doing so. Your doctor will use their judgment as to when they think it’s safe and appropriate to use those to help progress the labor or to help assess the progression of the labor. They are safe, they are utilized and your doctor is going to make their judgment call as to whether or not they should be used.
