An Apgar score is important in assessing or checking how the newborn, the brand newborn baby is doing. It was designed by a doctor who actually was an anesthesiologist, Dr. Apgar, many years ago and it checks for five things. It's the pulse, breathing, tone of the baby, color, and reflexes. And you get a score from zero, one, or two each one, so the top score is ten. The lowest score of course is a zero. And you check it at one a five minutes of life. It's done usually by the nurse, midwife, or maybe the doctor as well. And a score over 7, or 8, 9, and 10 is considered to be healthy and good. So it's a crude assessment, a rough assessment, of the baby, how he or she is doing.
