Miscarriages are very common. Up to 20 percent of all women experience miscarriages and these numbers increase as a woman gets older. The most common cause of a miscarriage is a random chromosomal event, that typically would not occur with future pregnancies. However, there are things that you can do to make sure your pregnancy is healthier the second time around. Take prenatal vitamins, eat healthy, manage your weight before hand, especially if you have diabetes. Decrease or eliminate caffeine and avoid alcohol completely. Some doctors would recommend progesterone supplements if it shows that you need it. In addition, if you have recurrent miscarriages, an extensive evaluation has to be done to rule out rare bleeding disorders. If one is found, a doctor would recommend baby aspirin and possibly blood thinners, to prevent a miscarriage from occurring.
