If you want to do elimination communication, you really don’t need very many supplies to get started, especially if it’s a baby, if it’s an infant – a bowl, a sink, the toilet – whatever you need to hold him over is fine. As they get a little older, you will want to get an infant seat for your toilet – it will just make your life easier so you don’t have to hold him when he starts getting heavier. Otherwise, the only other supplies that you might not think of are especially if you’re doing something like cloth diapering, I think even with disposables, you need – once you start – you need a lot more diapers than the newborn lists and layettes recommend, because you’re changing them constantly. If he’s the least bit wet, you’re going to want to change him, so you’re going to want a lot more than the typical parent. The upside is that as he gets older and starts holding it longer and going on the pot more often, you’ll actually need less diapers. So there’s that trade off as he gets older, you won’t go through as many. But if you’re starting them young, you’re going to want to stock up on diapers more than you think you will.

Mom & Writer

Megan Hyndman is the mother to two-year-old Finnegan and a newborn, Saoirse. She is a writer, yoga teacher and private tutor and has recently started her own tutoring company, Honors Educational Services.  She and her husband Jason have been married since 2006, and since that time they’ve gone from a couple who thought they never wanted kids to a family of five, if you count the dog – and the 60-lb Rottweiler mix is definitely one of the kids.  The first baby under six months either parent ever saw was their own son, after a home birth, so they had to learn everything from scratch.  As a home birthing, cloth-diapering, infant potty-training, breastfeeding, sort of co-sleeping parent planning to home school, who also vaccinates, circumcises, disciplines, watches TV with Finn way more than she should and works full time, Megan doesn’t really fit into any “Mommy groups” – and that’s okay with her. Megan’s parenting philosophy is the same philosophy she tells her tutoring students: Use What Works for You.
