The key to any effective homework routine is consistency. The particulars can very, whether the kids do homework right when they get home, if they eat a snack first, if they play first – that can vary. But the key is that the kids know that a routine will be done consistently, they will be held accountable for that routine. And once kids get used to that, then homework should become easier and easier. I recommend having the kids start their homework as early as possible, because if the hours go by and all of a sudden it’s 8 or 9 o’clock, then we’re in for some trouble. So the earlier the kids start, the more time they have afterwards to do some enjoyable activities and the more time they have to finish the work if things drag on. So regardless of the particulars that you and your child determine for your homework routine, the key, again, is consistency. And once you figure out what will be done in what order at what times, things should become easier and easier over time.
