Some kids do have a tough time communicating. You know, that’s a special part of the brain, being able to articulate things, that needs to develop. And you need to try to do things like role model good communication, you need to help your child learn like a feelings vocabulary. You need to be able to teach your child how to express themselves, how to put thoughts into words, and even maybe feelings and other people’s feelings. Sometimes using technology. I like that – you could email or text and it takes out some of the anxiety about communication and that could help them too. You know, for the kids that really have a difficult time, sometimes we’ll role play. I have parents do that where they have a thought or feeling they’re trying to articulate and what we’ll do is we’ll practice it. And then something that might be even a little less threatening is try to watch a movie or a film and if you have a TiVo and if it’s something you could stop, you could actually process a little bit about, “Hey, what do you think that person is feeling and thinking?” Or, “What do you think that person should say to the other character?” And, “What do you think is going to happen?” And those are ways, I think, that could really help kids with communication.
