When my son was unable to latch basically from the first time we tried to breastfeed onward, it came as sort of a shock because, it's sort of strange because I knew that there could be problems breastfeeding. Every class that I had taken and every book I read on it, which were many, sort of implied that it was going to be this natural and instinctive experience; so when it wasn't, it came as a shock. And we saw seven different lactation consultants, all of whom were excellent but none of whom could figure out what was wrong. One of them suspected that he might have what they call a tongue-tie, which can be fixed by a procedure called the frenectomy, so we tried that. But ultimately it didn't make a difference. So at that point I decided just to pump my milk and feed him in bottles which he was able to take. And I hated pumping, but it was sort of worth it because at least I wasn't having these horrible experiences of every time I tried to nurse he would be screaming in frustration and I would be cringing in pain. At least with the bottle I could calmly sit there and look into his eyes and we had these magical moments that I had so craved. So at least it was a temporary solution to the problem.
