A lot of women are curious about combo feeding, especially working women for whom it can be very difficult to exclusively breastfeed and keep up with your baby´s needs when you are having to pump for eight hours a day. I think it´s an unfortunate thing that more lactation consultants and breastfeeding experts don´t talk about combo feeding because for a lot of women the concept of exclusive breastfeeding for one year or for six months and then with solids for a year can be really daunting. And I think sometimes there is a lot of power in a relief bottle, and there are some legitimate concerns at the beginning of disrupting your milk supply or causing nipple confusion for your baby if you are switching between breast and bottle but after a couple weeks once breastfeeding is well established, there really is no harm in giving your baby a bottle occasionally or even doing half and half. For women who can´t keep up milk supply wise, this can be a godsend. This enables them to maintain the breastfeeding relationship and get all the wonderful advantages and benefits of breastfeeding but also be able to nurse their child adequately. So I think instead of being afraid of combing the two, we should really find ways for each individual woman to reach her own breastfeeding goals and if that includes some formula, then so be it.
