Many of the new car seats on the market are equipped with a top tether for when you’re using that convertible seat in the forward facing position. However, a lot of them are now allowing you to use that top tether also in the rear facing position. It’s important to note that that top tether is not to be tightened so tight that it’s pulling the car seat down for a further recline. It’s mostly to prevent the car seat from bouncing back up in the event of an accident. When it rides the wave of the crash, that top tether on the rear-facing car seat is going to keep it anchored down further, so that your child doesn’t come up as much in the accident. So, you can usually wrap the little attachment that comes on the tether around the seat rail, on the back of your front seats or your passenger seat. Wrap that little attachment around it, and you can hook that top tether right to the hook that comes provided with the car seat. You should always reference your car seat manual to make sure that you’re following the instructions properly. It is not required in most car seat installations, but it’s an optional add-on.
