The most important thing for me to teach my child is the power of hard work. He does not get praised for simply showing up and being present. He has to work hard and put in his full effort. It starts with things that he may not be interested in doing, like swimming, learning to ride a bike, playing the piano. This requires hard work and requires trying something that you might not want to do and putting in your best effort. If he turns in artwork to me that's scribbles, I don't praise him and lavish him with accolades how amazing it is. I tell him, "You need to work on this and put in your best effort." He's learned that with the value of hard work, you have results that are amazing and experiences that can carry you far in life. He's also going to learn the rewards of hard work when he gets a puppy soon. It is hard work, just like having a child, but the benefits are really worth it just as long as you put in your best effort.
