If we don't protect in our home - with our spouse, with our mate, with our lovers, with our children - that place, then not only the electronics makes its way in, the stress makes its way in. And you never get a break from it. And it takes over the house. You know all of us are living today with what I call the assault of modernity. The television, the texts, the emails, the phone calls. And the inner life is just that. It's inside. And it needs to be protected. Just like when you have your baby's room, and it's a little enchanted place. There's no age at which that space of protecting your innocent self is no longer necessary. And in an adult's life that has to do with prayer. It has to do with meditation. It has to do with spiritual practice. And that is true as well in our love life, in our friendships. That's what holds families together, and our relationship with our children. We are not vigilant enough in protecting the sacred place. And protecting the sacred place means, among other things, no, television will not be on during dinner. Protecting the sacred place means, no, you cannot text during dinner. Hello! And once again, get it in in their early. Don't wait for the rolling-eyed years. Do it when the kids know from the beginning. Have even the little things. But it affects the nervous system. We have to be vigilant about this. These things will not be healed in our culture one broad stroke at a time. They're healed one small issue at a time. One person becoming more conscious. That is the greatest gift our children. It's the greatest gift we can give ourselves. And I think it's the greatest gift we can give to the world.
