Oh my gosh, I love it when my kids ask me that question cuz the first response is, "Am I so-and-so's mama? Do you belong to so-and-so's family?" No, well, then we don't follow so-and-so's rules. And that's the key because we can't be afraid to say to our children No, first of all, and we can't be afraid to say, "Our family is our family." We operate in a certain way. We do this because this matters to us, and we're living according to our values, not the values of so-and-so or such-and-such. That may be great for them. It's not great for us. And we need to be willing to stand up for what we believe in and tell our kids no. Like I said, I love it when my kids ask me that question because then I have the opportunity to say, "Honey, you are mine, and in this family, this is what we do."
