My ultimate advice for the parents of a teenager is; number one, you have to hold your kid accountable. This is how the real world works. As your kid is going into the real world, one of the biggest gifts you can give your teen, is bringing something similar into your home so they can acclimate to that. Go into the world and not fall flat on their face when they deal with that on a regular basis. With that being said, they are not going to like you. There's going to be a lot of fighting and a lot of pushing boundaries. This is normal for teens and development. It's a complete shock on the senses for the parent going through this for the first time and it's very difficult. Being a parent is a thankless job. With that being said, this is the only crucial four years of your kids life where what they do has an impact on everything else. How they do on their academics has an effect on college which effects job, which effects money, which effects the comfort for the rest of their life. What they are doing right now has an effect on the next sixty. I see so many parents who are willing to take the short-term gain of not having to deal with stress and not hold their child accountable, for the long-term effects of everything that comes thereafter. If you hold your kid accountable, they are not going to like you, but they are going to respect you. You are going to be raising a healthy, successful adult. You are not going to get the "thank you" and appreciate the sacrifice that you put into this until they are in the mid-20s. When it comes around, it's going to be worth every bit of it.
