Sometimes parents feel that their children are being treated unfairly in school. And one of the first things that I think they have to do is take a step back and see if it happens repeatedly. If it does, then it's time to go in and have a conversation with the teacher and express your concern. Don't accuse. Express your concern. And give your teacher examples of why you think they were unfairly treated or when you think they were unfairly treated. And let the teacher explain. We've got to remember that not all children are strong in all ways. And maybe the relative strength of another child is why they get the starring role in the play or why they were asked to be the soloist or why in the tryouts for choir they weren't one of the children that was chosen. Disappointment and failure is as important a learning experience in children's lives as success and achievement. Because failure motivates children to try harder and to dig deep the next time to make sure they're more successful. Often parents see a child very defeated after they haven't gotten what they wanted or they haven't achieved something that they thought they deserved to have. How we react as parents is really important to that setback. Because if we over emphasize the importance of that situation, then you inspire a child to not try to the next time to even go out for something. So let them understand that they fail that they time. And use that as an opportunity to encourage them to try again and to work harder the next time for what they want rather than just getting into a pity part with them that makes them feel as though they've been wronged in an extraordinary way and then disabuses them of the opportunity to try something again.

Head of School

Now starting her forty-second year, Reveta Bowers is the Head of School at The Center for Early Education, an urban pre-school through 6th grade Los Angeles independent school with 538 students. Devoted to children and education, Ms. Bowers served and has served on a number of boards. She is currently on Board of Overseers of the UCLA Healthcare System, on the founding board of the African American Board Leadership Institute and the board of the FEDCO Charitable Foundation. She just completed serving as Chair Emeritus of the Board of Directors of the California Community Foundation. A past president and former secretary of The Educational Records Bureau Board, Reveta Bowers was also a member of the Advisory Board to the Klingenstein Center at Teacher’s College for ten years. She served as an outside director on the Board of Directors of the Walt Disney Company for ten years and is a former member of the Harvard-Westlake, Brentwood and Windward School boards. Reveta was on the Council for Spiritual and Ethical Education board, and the boards of the National Association of Principals of Schools for Girls and the Country Day Headmaster’s Association. She served as a trustee and treasurer of the NAIS Board, and as past president of the California Association of Independent Schools. For the past thirteen years she has also been on the faculty of the NAIS Institute for New Heads where she serves as the Lead Faculty member. One of her proudest career moments was receiving the NAIS Diversity Leadership Award in 2009. She has had a long and rewarding career in independent schools and finds her work with organizations supporting education, students, parents, community and Board work to be continually inspiring.
